Membership
CLR membership involves a substantial commitment of time and energy. Each member relies on the thoughtful and thorough work of other members; we also endeavor to treat each other with professionalism and respect. CLR membership is exciting, challenging, and enjoyable.
Members perform the responsibilities not only to the benefit of the legal community, but to uphold our tradition of excellence established by ALL of our members, past and present. This publication strives for intellectual integrity and original scholarship. CLR hopes to provide you with opportunities to shape and debate important legal questions, to develop and publish your own legal writing, and to enjoy a stimulating and exciting environment. Indeed, CLR is an important part of its members' legal education.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the California Law Review?CLR is an academic journal that publishes legal scholarship produced by academics, practitioners, and students. We are a completely student run organization and our offices can be found on the 5th Floor of Simon Hall.
What do Members Do?2L members are primarily responsible for editing the articles, comments, and book reviews published by CLR, and for source collecting and cite-checking. In addition to these requirements, every 2L member completes either a casenote or a comment that is then considered for publication in CLR.
As a Member, What would my Requirements Be?CLR is one of the few journals at Boalt that publishes six issues a year, including one during the summer. In order to keep CLR on its publishing schedule, members are required to commit 40 hours during the summer after their second year. To meet this requirement, members have the option of working an entire work week (Monday-Friday) or some combination of two work days and two weekend days. CLR makes an effort to accommodate requests for specific dates, and employers are generally understanding when they are given notice by members.
How do I become a Member?Entry to CLR is by invitation after a write-on competition or publication of a student comment.
What About Transfer Students? Can We Become Members?Yes! Every year Boalt generally accepts approximately 30 transfer students who spent their first year studying at other law schools. Since the admissions office does not determine the acceptance of transfer students until late in the summer, there is no way for them to compete in the ordinary write-on competition. However, to give transfer students the chance to join CLR, a second mini-write-on competition is held shortly after the beginning of the fall semester.
