Policy for Joint Degree and JSP Students and Others Spending Next Year Away from Boalt

Joint Degree Students

Students receiving joint degrees must participate in the write-on competition at the end of their first year at Boalt. Joint Degree students will not be allowed to write-on the next year before they begin their 2L year. Although students must complete the competition following their first year, they may defer their membership on the law review for one year. Joint degree students who join CLR will serve a term of up to two years.

JSP Students

JSP students who are receiving a JD must complete the write-on competition after their 1L year at Boalt. JSP students who are not receiving a JD may participate in the write-on competition following either their first or second year in the program. Although JSP students who are not receiving a JD may choose which year to write-on, they may not write-on twice. JSP students who join CLR will serve a term of up to two years.

Students Taking a Year Off After their First Year

Students taking time away after their 1L year must participate in the write-on competition at the end of their first year at Boalt. Although students must complete the competition following their first year, they may defer their membership on the law review for one year. Once they begin, students who took time away will serve a term of up two years on CLR.
